BLEE's DECREE
The Nerf Rival Khaos is essentially the Nerf Rapidstrike for the Rival line of blasters. With an aggressively tacti-cool look to it and the rapid-fire full auto ball blasting, the Khaos is a solid entry into Nerf’s catalogue of blasters. But, everything’s not unicorns and lollipops. There are a few negatives to discuss…
Pros
- Full-Auto Nerf Rival Blaster
- Conveyor Belt Feeding Mech
- High Capacity 40-rd Magazine

This thing is big and bad and it’s fully automatic and it’s red. This is the very first time that a Rival blaster has ever gone full auto!! How exciting!!
Nerf Rival Khaos Review
I had been dying to get my hands on this thing ever since the New York Toy Fair and I gotta say, I’m not really disappointed with what I got! The end product is very mean, very aggressive, and very fun!
- N-Strike Elite blasters and Elite darts deliver the ultimate in blaster performance
- Mega Series blasters feature Mega Whistler Darts that scream through the air, defend against a zombie invasion with Zombie Strike blasters
- Ignite the night with Fire Vision sports gear that glows when thrown
- Raise your game with the Pro-Grip Football and Nerfoop basketball set
- Ages 14 and up, 40 high-impact rounds at a velocity up to 100 fps (30 mps)
The Nerf Khaos is an absolute blast to use and fire and being able to just hold down the trigger and watch the High Impact Rounds (Rival balls) just go up the new 40 round transparent magazine, into the blaster and then fly out of the barrel with the same speed and accuracy that we’re accustomed to when dealing with the Nerf Rival line of blasters — it’s too cool!
But it’s not all lollipops and unicorns, guys, the Nerf Rival Khaos has a few drawbacks as well… so continue reading and discover the pro’s, the con’s, and ultimately if I think it’s worth a purchase.
What’s In The Box?
So inside the box, you’ll find the Rival blaster itself, an extremely large oversized 40 round magazine, and 39 plus 1 HIR’s. You will also find the instruction manual, which we shall promptly discard.
KHAOS Unleashed
The Nerf Rival Khaos MXVI-4000 is the latest Rival blaster from Nerf. And Rival, of course, is the series that uses High-Impact Rounds, which are those soft little yellow round golf ball looking things. Instead of using the typical Nerf darts they use these high-impact foam balls, which are actually pretty cool.
The Nerf Rival Khaos is the first full-auto blaster for the Nerf Rival series. Full auto, baby! Hold down the rev trigger and then hold down the firing trigger for full automatic foam, or you can release every few seconds and press it again for burst fire. If you open the jam door, you can see those little magical flywheels. So if you have a full-auto flywheel powered blaster with a rev trigger or acceleration trigger and a firing trigger, you know it uses batteries. The Khaos has a removable battery tray that takes six D size batteries. Pretty crazy.
External Features
Going over the rest of the external features, starting at the muzzle, there is no Nerf attachment point. They haven’t made any barrels or anything like that for Rival and Rival blasters are not compatible with regular Nerf Elite attachments. So no barrel attachment point on the muzzle, but up top they have a very large tactical rail so you just know they’re going to come out with some accessories in the future for this thing.
But for right now, we just have a large rail and two flip up iron ABS sights. I love that about the Rival series, by the way, these ABS sights are pretty cool. Always. Although I think the Zeus probably still has the upper hand with the best sights. I already talked about the jam door and right under that is the mag-well. If you push the mag release button, which is located on the side of the trigger guard, you can pull out this monstrous 40 round magazine.
Yup, you can hold 40 of those little yellow balls in the ginormous magazine and it’s pretty sick. The mag release button is ambidextrous, as it’s on either side of the blaster. The safety lock is only on the left side of the blaster, though, but it’s not a mandatory feature.
If you flip the safety switch down, you can no longer pull the rev trigger and if you can’t pull the rev trigger, you can’t pull the firing trigger. So it renders the blaster completely safe for storage or transportation. It’s positioned well and easy to hit with your thumb. Flip it backup and you’re back in business. It’s a little harder for my left-handed Nerfer’s, but it’s not impossible.
At the back of the blaster is where you’ll find the shoulder stock. It looks like it should be adjustable, it really does, but it’s not. It resembles one of those CTR stocks that you find on a real steel blaster firearm or maybe airsoft. It looks really cool, if not a little small. (And I can definitely tell you right now it’s a little short as well but we’ll get to that later…) For now, that just about does it for the external features. This is the Nerf Rival Khaos. Pretty cool.
Khaotic Performance
So, next up let’s see what kind of work this thing puts in at the range. Let’s fire it!
Firing the Nerf Rival Khaos is a lot of fun. This is the first time we’ve seen a fully automatic Rival blaster and it’s just fun. The Khaos shoots at an average velocity of 100 feet per second, just as advertised. This also keeps in line with the power that we first saw from the Nerf Rival Apollo. The Nerf Rival Zeus went kind of soft in that department, but it was still a fun blaster. The Nerf Rival Khaos wins in this department, boasting the hard shooting of the Apollo and surpassing the Zeus at squeezing those little balls through a pair of flywheels.
Nerf Rival Khaos Final Thoughts
Alright guys, it’s time for my final thoughts and opinions on the Nerf Rival Khaos MXVI-4000. Basically this thing is pretty awesome. This. Thing. Is. Pretty. Awesome. The ergonomics are definitely on point. The pistol grip is phenomenal! It’s perfect, actually. It feels absolutely perfect when you hold it, very comfortable, very ergonomically pleasing.
Right under the muzzle is not a bad way to hold it. It’s a natural hand rest. This whole area right here is p retty good. You can hold it here however you want and it feels good. With the tac rail down there, I’m sure you can attach some kind of Worker foregrip and give yourself another option for how to control the Khaos.
As for the aesthetics, it looks pretty good. I love the Rival design, including those black stripes looks very cool and uh, #TeamRED! But it looks very nice, very aggressive, very mean with the oversized muzzle right there looking very proper. The coolness extends all the way down to the shoulder stock, even though it doesn’t extend.
It looks like one of those airsoft stocks that we’ve been using with the Worker buffer tubes, except it’s not adjustable at all. It looks like you should be able to click in someplace underneath the stock and pull it out. Even the way the battery tray is designed looks like it would pull out. It looks like you can just pop some button and pull this out to a reasonable size, but unfortunately you can’t.
So you’re stuck with this undersized stock. It’s not completely terrible, but it’s a hundred percent too short. Considering the Nerf Rival line is marketed to 14 and up, I have no idea what they were thinking with this. This definitely should have been adjustable.
As for the performance, the Nerf Rival Khaos is a blast to use. It’s very fun to operate. Being the first and only full-auto blaster on the Rival line is a thing to marvel at. It’s very neat. It has the novelty to it just for that reason alone. It’s honestly not shooting as fast as I thought. I thought it’d be shooting a little bit faster. As it stands currently, it’s not even shooting as fast as the HyperFire, definitely not, even though it uses the same kind of feeding mech. It has that conveyor belt looking feeding mech here to fire the blaster.
The feeding mechanism seems to do a little better with the HIR’s than Elite darts, but it’s still not 100% flawless. I got a few misfeeds here where it would just lose grip and not be able to pull the Rival rounds into the flywheels, but it corrected itself usually after a second or two. So it’s not that much of an issue, although I’m concerned about after you mod it, whether that problem will become more pronounced… I wonder.
The Competition…
When the Nerf Rival Khaos came out, it had no competition on the Rival line. It was the first full-auto Rival blaster and it packed quite a punch. It was like the Apollo and Zeus did a fusion dance from Dragon Ball Z. The closest thing it had to competition would be the similarly functioning Nerf Elite HyperFire.
Purchase Recommendation?
All in all though guys, the Nerf Rival Khaos gets a purchase recommendation. This is a cool blaster. So definitely purchase this thing. If you like Rival, you’re gonna like this. And if you’re a small Nerfer, the stock won’t even bother you that much. It’s a very cool blaster and it’s really fun to use and that’s all that matters at the end of the day. So I enjoyed this blaster a lot. Nothing’s perfect, so you just have to deal with it and adapt and this one gets a pass for me, guys. So be sure to check out the Nerf Rival Khaos!
