( votes)Summary
The legendary Nerf Maverick is the forefather of all current Nerf sidearm blasters. It gave birth to the Strongarm, FlipFury, and CycloneShock. And it sucks, because it didn’t get a fathers day card from none of them. The Nerf Maverick is a great sized compact sidearm blaster. Trusty and reliable, it will still pack a punch today. If you can tolerate no Slam-Fire and shorter ranges, you’ll be gold, ponyboy.
Released in early 2005, the Nerf N-Strike Maverick Rev-6 became an instant hit. Now, almost 10 years later, it is still widely available for purchase. The Maverick is still popular and relevant. It still sits on shelves next to much newer blasters. Why? How could this be? Continue reading to find out why the Nerf Maverick is one of the best-selling Nerf guns of all time.
Kickin’ It Old School
I don’t usually do reviews of products that have successful direct successors, but this is a unique situation. The Nerf Strongarm is newer, bigger, and more powerful. But is it better? The Nerf Maverick is one of the only older blasters to be recommended over its newer, Elite-class brethren. Arguably, it is the more preferred weapon. It is smaller and more compact. It just feels good to hold and to wield. It is very accurate and has a respectable range for its age. It is compatible with every dart that was available at the time, from Suction Darts to Whistlers. Frankly, it is just a better looking blaster. It comes in a few different colors, too. The Nerf Maverick is also easy to alter and modify. There are a lot of easy-to-follow mod instructions online. Check out this guide for an awesome Maverick mod: Maverick Double, Triple Barrel. That one’s a little more involved, though. Here is an easy one I definitely recommend: Maverick Drop Clip. With that mod, you can drop out the whole cylinder when you run out of darts. Grab a new preloaded cylinder and pop it in. How cool is that? Too cool for school, that’s how cool.
The Test of Time
Honestly, the Nerf Maverick is a great weapon. Unfortunately, it is a bit dated. Besides the aesthetic properties, the Nerf Strongarm beats the Maverick every time. Performance, range and reliability: all better on the Strongarm. The Maverick tops out at about a 30 foot range. There is no Slam-Fire. The tactical rail is on the pistol slide, which makes it difficult to use with attachments. The reason I think so many people hold this blaster in such high regard, is the nostalgia factor. It was the quintessential blaster of its time, but times are a changin’. It was the forefather that gave birth to the Elite blasters of today. For that alone it should forever hold a place in your heart. However, it may not still earn a place in your holster.
What Kind of Animal Are You?
What do you like? Most people should probably get the newer Nerf Strongarm Blaster. It’s the direct successor to this blaster. It is stronger, faster, and better. However, some of you are collectors or just want to own a piece of Nerf history. For people like that, I can wholeheartedly recommend a purchase of the Nerf Maverick. It is the original trusty sidearm blaster. For the price at which it’s sold, it’s a win-win situation. If you just want a cheap backup weapon, this blaster will serve you well. If you want to take it apart and experiment, do your best. Ready to try your hand at modding? Look no further than the Nerf Maverick.
