Yeah, the Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator is a beast. But this may be a case of a dog with a bark bigger than its bite. The Doominator is a very cool looking blaster and has a great gimmick in the four rotating cylinders. But its range and power are just not up to par.

Think you have the FlipFury outgunned? Think again. It just called its big brother to come and beat you up…
Meet the Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator blaster. Its mission? Total horde eradication.
Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator Blaster
The Nerf Strongarm was a great little blaster. Quick and powerful, with slam fire to boot. But its size and small ammo capacity left it forever in secondary blaster categories. Then Nerf doubled the cylinders and increased the capacity from 6 to 12 shots! They even gave it a sweet flipping mechanism to switch between the two cylinders. They dubbed it the Nerf FlipFury. But its small size still left it as a secondary. A super secondary, but still just a secondary blaster…
Enter in the Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator. Doubling the cylinders again, Nerf now has a total of 4 cylinders in one blaster. This time we see the ammo capacity increase to a whopping 24 darts. This time there’s no more pistol slide. They’ve replaced the slide with a pump grip. Seems pretty epic, no? But is it enough..? Let’s see!
Doominating the Name Game.
This blaster spells certain doom for our zombie headed friends. But speaking of spelling, I’ve seen countless people sort of “auto-correct” the name of this blaster in their heads. Instead of Doominator, their brain forces them to see and/or write “Dominator.”
But with a name like Doominator,” the Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator has already won half of the battle before the Nerf War even begins. The name of the game is intimidation and the Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator is on top of it. Also, with this new Fantastic Four movie out, I also can’t help but think of Dr. Doom. Good things.
In the Belly of the Beast. (Unboxing the Doominator.)
When you get the Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator, the first thing you may notice is how slim the box is. The box is heavy, but very thin. It’s completely enclosed, save for a little dart window where you can view all 24 Zombie Strike Darts.
Once you open up the box, you’ll see the Doominator just sitting there half naked. It doesn’t even have all of its cylinders on! Gasp! Well, yeah, deal with it. The Doominator comes with only 2 cylinders assembled. The other two you have to attach yourself. Luckily it’s a simple enough process.
Just slide them on and push until you hear an audible click. That’s it. The Doominator is a meaty beast, so that’s how they keep the packaging slim. Next, you’ll find that the priming handle/foregrip isn’t attached either. Just grab it and screw it in on the bottom of the black front piece by the muzzle. Finally, rip the darts out from their plastic prison and load up all 4 cylinders. That’s all. Piece of cake.
How the Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator Works.
The Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator may not look intimidating only to your enemies. It’s large and has a lot of different mechanisms on it and it can be a bit intimidating to you when you first pick it up. But, no worries. I’ll break it down for you! It’s actually rather easy.
You just pull the green priming handle all the way back towards you and then push it all the way forwards towards the muzzle. Then you can pull the trigger. After firing 6 darts, your cylinder will be empty. But remember, you’ve got 3 more cylinders. Your blaster’s not empty yet! Reach out with the hand that’s on the main handle and stick two fingers in that double knuckle ring looking lever under the trigger.
Pull this in towards the handle and you will rotate your cylinder drum. 6 more darts ready to fire! Repeat this process every time you empty a cylinder. Pretty sweet! If you’ve used the Nerf FlipFury then this will sound pretty familiar. Another thing that should be familiar to you by now is Slam-Fire. Yup, that’s right, the Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator blaster is fully capable of Slam-Fire. That means you can fire off all 24 darts as fast as you can pull the trigger(s).
Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator Aesthetics.
The Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator is a very cool, very intimidating looking blaster. It looks great. When it was first revealed, I said it looked like an M32 Multiple Grenade Launcher. And now, after seeing it in person, I still feel the same way. The design, while a bit bulky, works pretty well overall.
The color scheme is very nice and very striking. It definitely stands out. There have been majority green blasters in the Zombie Strike series before, but none this big. Like nearly all other Zombie Strike blasters, the Doominator also features a fake grey tape or cloth wrapping etched into the plastic handle. Like them, it also has a faux-wood buttstock, too.
It has one large sized tactical rail up top. Once again, just like with the FlipFury, it has what looks like a tactical rail underneath the cylinders. But, just like the FlipFury, it is not a tactical rail at all. I don’t know what you would really put down there, though, so that’s not necessarily a bad thing. No barrel extensions on the Doominator either, but really it’s already big enough. Overall, a very good looking blaster.
So it wins on aesthetic properties, but the ergonomics? That’s a bit different. The main handle is pretty comfortable, but the small thumbhole opening behind the handle is a bit too small. The fake stock is way too small and close to everything else. It clearly doesn’t extend out past the back of the blaster body at all. Shouldering the Doominator is a no go.
Also, while on the handle, reaching out from gripping the handle to hook your fingers into the rotation mechanism for the cylinders? That’s a bit of a stretch, too. Literally. It’s a bit too far away. If you have smaller hands, this might be a problem for you.
It’s not all bad though, the priming handle is a great size and it is comfortable to hold and operate. I love the fact that they allow you to reposition the handle to the left or right sides as well as the bottom — that’s great!
Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator Performance.
To operate the Doominator blaster, load up all 4 cylinders with 6 darts each. Pull the pump grip handle back towards you and then push it back forward. Pull the trigger. That’s it. Alternately, you can just hold the trigger down and push and pull the pump handle repeatedly, enabling Slam-Fire mode. Whichever you prefer.
After firing 6 shots, though, you’ll have to pull the double-knuckle flip switch mechanism to switch cylinders. But how does it shoot, though? I’m not going to lie. For such a big beastly blaster, the performance just isn’t there. Looking back at the box, you’ll notice that there are no Range Claims anywhere to be found. And now you’ll learn why.
The Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator doesn’t have terrible range, but it’s definitely sub-Elite class. I was barely able to hit 40 feet with this thing, which does feel sort of disappointing. Next, there was some kind of alignment issue that happened sometimes where the chamber wouldn’t line up properly with the plunger seal. This caused misfires. It didn’t happen often, though.
Finally, and this may just be a tiny gripe, but it doesn’t feel as smooth as the FlipFury. Obviously the flip trigger is going to feel heavier since it’s 4 cylinders instead of just 2, but still… I was a little disappointed with that, too.
So all in all, this blaster is more of a looker than an actual performer. Its range is low, its rate of fire is reasonably high, but its consistency and reliability are only average. Take from that what you will. I will give it one thing, though, it is a blast to use it. It’s pretty fun. So if you don’t care about long range or other things like that, you may enjoy this blaster just fine.
Summing Things Up…
The Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator is a very fun, but flawed, blaster. It’s fun to run around with and it’s mostly fun to shoot. It has a huge ammo capacity for a non Clip System blaster. It’s also a very cool looking blaster. These things are all great until you see the price of the blaster.
At that price point, knowing everything I know, I can not honestly recommend a purchase of this blaster. Once it goes on sale or sees a markdown in price, then that would be a good time to pick it up. Until then? Not so much.
Well that’s all for this one, Nerf Nation. Tell me what you think down below in the comments section. Do you love the Nerf Doominator? Do you hate it? Let me know!

Let’s take a look into the NIC and see what the consensus is amongst some of my fellow Nerf reviewers. If anybody loves this Nerf Zombie Strike Doominator blaster, it’s The Real Nerf Joker himself! I can see why, it matches perfectly with his costume. Awesome picture, Joker! The Doominator looks good with the new Nerf Red Dot Sight, doesn’t it? Can you remove these barrels from the nerf doominator ? I got the extra barrel locked in on the front but not the back. so it won’t spin. Is there a way to unlock it?
Blee says
You can definitely remove them, but I’m not quite sure how… I’m not a huge fan of the Doominator. What are you trying to do exactly?
Courtney Sherron-Valentine says
Did you figure it out? Because I’m dealing with this same issue

I have the same problem!! We have the barrel attached in front but not the back and need to undo it! How did you resolve it?
Shauna says
How do you get the trigger unstuck the barrels won’t go around either. Seems jammed and we just put it together
Blee says
Sorry I can’t really help with these questions, but I have barely touched my Doominator — I don’t really like it too much, mostly for the reasons listed in this comment section. It’s too much trouble.
